Blue Ribbon path begins for district campuses

Two district schools are feeling blue, and it’s all good. Harry Stone Montessori Academy and Trinidad “Trini” Garza Early College High School are among 26 Texas schools nominated as a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School.

The prestigious award, a program of the U.S. Department of Education, recognizes exemplary schools where students are performing at high levels.

Harry Stone, located in Oak Cliff, serves more than 500 students in pre-k through eighth grade and recently celebrated becoming an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, one of only two in the district.

Garza shares space with Mountain View Community College and serves more than 400 students in grades 9-12. As an early college high school, Garza students can graduate with a high school diploma, an associate degree from Mountain View College, or 48 core college credit hours toward a baccalaureate degree.

Each nominated school serves a population where 25 percent or more of its students are economically disadvantaged.

The schools will now complete a rigorous application process. The winners will be announced in September.
