On Friday, Nov. 14, special guests volunteered to read to students across Dallas ISD during a JFK Day of Service Celebration/Veterans Day Literacy Event. The effort was part of Dallas Reads, a language and literacy initiative of the district. The purpose was to highlight the importance of literacy and public service as well as to honor community heroes such as veterans, police, firefighters and others. The day also gave the opportunity for high-school students to earn community service hours by reading to elementary students. Robert E. Lee Elementary School opened its doors to the community during a special open house the morning of Nov. 11. The event was an effort led by Council members Phillip Kingston and Adam Medrano to re-introduce Robert E. Lee Elementary School to the community it proudly serves. Visitors were treated to welcome messages from a variety of speakers, including Board president Miguel Solis, Superintendent Mike Miles and new principal Bridget Ransom.
