A lone oven, refrigerator and a few kitchen cabinets are all that remain from what used to be a home economics classroom at James Madison High School. Now, parent volunteers have a fantastic new space to work in thanks to support from The Heart of America Foundation and Capital One. Last year, Madison’s library was renovated by the same two groups. In the Parent Center, Dallas ISD crews ripped out the no-longer-used cooking equipment, rebuilt walls, hid original piping and installed new flooring. Dallas ISD has been fortunate, so far, that flu season has not had much of an impact on student attendance, or any planned activities. We’ve taken a series of proactive steps to reduce any potential impact as well. As a standard practice, our schools are cleaned and disinfected regularly. Additionally, we work hard to continue educating students and staff regarding proactive preventative hygiene and care, including proper hand washing, cough etiquette, limited exposure to ill individuals, and obtaining a flu vaccine shot. In anticipation of a large crowd for the Skyline Raiders-Allen Eagle semifinal playoff game in SMU’s Ford Stadium Saturday, Dec. 13, the City of Highland Park will be enforcing residents-only parking in surrounding neighborhoods. Dallas ISD students, parents and staff are strongly encouraged to park in the SMU parking facilities or ride DART and not park in the neighborhoods surrounding the stadium.
