Throughout February, Dallas ISD is observing Black History Month. This year’s national theme, A Century of Black Life, History and Culture, not only celebrates the impact African Americans have made in history, but recognizes the important work of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, established in 1915. In 1926, the organization founded Black History Week, which later grew into Black History Month. Schools have planned a number of events to commemorate the month. Campus staff and administrators who were crucial in the district’s response to the Ebola virus in October 2014 were honored at a special reception on Monday, Feb. 9, at the Crow Collection of Asian Art. Individuals had been previously presented with Superintendent’s Awards of Meritorious Service and Commendation at Emmett J. The Cliburn Musical Awakenings program visits nearly 250 schools each year, to help stimulate the young music minds of children. Thomas L. Marsalis Elementary School, a campus without additional fine arts programs – aside from the basic requirements – received a music lesson of a lifetime. Top, classically-trained pianists spent some time with the school’s second through fourth-grade students. As part of the lesson, one of their second-grade classmates joined the elite group of musicians, on the bench, to perform a classical piece.
