Campus staff and administrators who were crucial in the district’s response to the Ebola virus in October 2014 were honored at a special reception on Monday, Feb. 9, at the Crow Collection of Asian Art. The Cliburn Musical Awakenings program visits nearly 250 schools each year, to help stimulate the young music minds of children. Thomas L. Marsalis Elementary School, a campus without additional fine arts programs – aside from the basic requirements – received a music lesson of a lifetime. Top, classically-trained pianists spent some time with the school’s second through fourth-grade students. As part of the lesson, one of their second-grade classmates joined the elite group of musicians, on the bench, to perform a classical piece. The next Open Mike meeting of the year will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at David W. Carter High School, 1819 W. Wheatland Road. The meeting will take place in the school’s library and will focus on Early Childhood Education led by Superintendent Mike Miles and Early Childhood Education Executive Director Alan Cohen. Open Mike meetings provide opportunities to engage with district chiefs and the superintendent in discussion about the direction of Dallas ISD and to pose questions to district leadership.
