For 25 years, the volunteer service organization Junior League of Dallas has opened doors to scores of learning experiences for Dallas ISD students by funding teachers’ proposals for creative educational projects. Since 1992, the group has invested $1.25 million in such opportunities for students through its Grants for Innovative Teaching (GFIT) Program. In preparation for next school year, the League is accepting proposals for grants of up to $2,000 from teachers and other school staff now through May 16. Information is available at www.jld.net. A group of students, families and members of the David G. Burnet Elementary community met for the first time on April 6 to develop the vision for the school’s planned garden and learning environment. Representatives from REAL School Gardens hosted a “Dine & Design” event at the campus that paired an early evening meal with a discussion about possibilities for the new garden, slated to be constructed this fall. Karolyn Brown, a teacher at Mt. Auburn Elementary School, has been honored with the Mirabeau B. Lamar Annual Award by the Grand Lodge of Texas, 14th District Masters, Wardens and Secretaries Association. Brown was one of only 18 educators and students in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to receive the award.
