The Oncor Mayor’s Race 5K is set for Saturday, Dec. 10, starting at the base of Reunion Tower. Once again, Dallas ISD students and staff can participate at no cost if they sign up through their schools. Forms from schools must be received by Dallas ISD Health and PE by Nov. 11. Each participant will receive a free T-shirt, those who finish will receive a finisher medallion and no-cost bus rides will be available to and from the event. The 10th Annual Junius Heights Home Tour will showcase six homes and also a tour of Dallas ISD’s Woodrow Wilson High School. The tour is set for 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6. The tour also includes  the Arts & Crafts Fair and a raffle at the Lakewood Library. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the event. Find information here: www.juniusheights.org/home-tour. Junius Heights is the largest historic district in Dallas, with a total of 700 homes.

On Friday, Oct. 28, students and staff at Ebby Halliday Elementary School joined with business and community volunteers to celebrate literacy at a special reading event in partnership with the Ebby Halliday Corporation. Volunteers from the Dallas Police Department, Dallas Public Library, a zoologist and Dallas ISD staff – along with fifth-graders – read books to classes. Students and staff dressed as their favorite storybook characters and in the afternoon, the day culminated with a parade to show off their creative costumes.

Trustee Lew Blackburn is hosting a District 5 Academic Pep Rally on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Wilmer Hutchins High School! Students who bring their reports cards will be eligible for prize drawings in certain categories. Also, students who bring a book they have read and students who give a summary of a book will be eligible for prize drawings.
