Aiden Ross from George Bannerman Dealey International Academy has won the Hero Two Doors Down Essay Contest sponsored by the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. The essay contest, which is based on the book “The Hero Two Doors Down” by Sharon Robinson, asked students what hero they would want to live down the street. For his winning essay, Ross explained why CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer is his personal hero. Ross and the other essay contest winners were honored this week at a breakfast ceremony AT&T Stadium. Culinary students at Thomas Jefferson High School competed in a recipe demo on Oct. 25. The winner gets to have their recipe published in a Medical City Children’s Hospital kid-friendly recipe book that will go out to more than 300,000 elementary students in January. Learn more in the above video!

Kiest Elementary hosted a community garden and school spruce up on Oct. 22. The school was awarded a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant for $2,000 to implement its Birds, Butterflies, Bees and Trees Garden. Teachers, students and volunteers installed a butterfly-shaped garden addition to the existing vegetable garden. The butterfly garden will grow plants that attract butterflies. Volunteers also planted trees, shrubs, and other plants that enhance the ecosystems to sustain butterflies, birds, and bees. Volunteers sowed wildflower seeds and prepped the vegetable garden beds. They will install five birdfeeders and birdhouses at a later date. The community came together…
