A handful of college students and recent graduates are teaching children this summer at Pease’s Freedom School, part of a national program launched by the Children’s Defense Fund. The six-week program is centered on reading, using literacy to drive self-empowerment and community engagement. The program at Dallas ISD’s Elisha M. A 2017 Skyline High School Graphic Design graduate will travel to New York City for the Games for Change Festival set for July 31-Aug. 2 after being named the Grand Prize Winner in the local contest. Cecilia Briscoe won for her design of a game for K-8 students focusing on Climate Change. The Games for Change program guided students through extensive research and the process to develop their projects based on three topics: Climate Change, Immigration Voice and Smart Cities. Eighteen students from four Dallas ISD high schools accepted scholarships totaling nearly $100,000 to visit other countries this summer to study as part of the CIEE High School Summer Abroad Program. More than 70 district students began applications for the program, and 22 were accepted into the Global Navigator Scholarship program, which Dallas ISD helped pioneer. The program focuses on language proficiency, local interactions and intentional reflection by sending students to countries all over the world.
