Dallas ISD Superintendent Stephanie S. Elizalde, Mayor Eric L. Johnson, and Junior League of Dallas President Christina N. Eubanks announced that the 27th Annual Dallas Mayor’s Back to School Fair will take place on Friday, August 4, inside the Automobile Building and Centennial Hall at Fair Park. The fair is a collaborative effort between Dallas ISD, the City of Dallas, nonprofits, corporations, and community volunteers. Each year, it serves more than 10,000 economically disadvantaged students in grade levels prekindergarten to 12 and their families. Dallas ISD’s robotics teams achieved remarkable success at the VEX Robotics World Championship that took place in May. Students showcased their technical prowess and teamwork, leaving a lasting impression on the judges. The “LadyBots” from Casa View Elementary earned the Girl Powered and Build Awards. Alex Sanger Preparatory took home the Sportsmanship Award and Winnetka Elementary’s two teams won the Energy Award. In the middle school division, the School for the Talented and Gifted in Pleasant Grove was awarded the Energy Award as well. For two weeks in June, Dallas ISD students who participated in the Summer Cool camp had the chance to take home books for their home libraries at no cost. In a partnership between Library & Media Services and the Extended Learning Opportunities department, 20,000 books were distributed to students at 20 elementary campus sites.  Students from Pre-K through second grade could take up to five books home while students in grades three through five were allowed to take home up to three books. In our ongoing effort to ensure safer schools, Dallas ISD will require clear backpacks for all students in grades K-12 for the 2023-2024 school year. This requirement does not apply to Pre-K students. As an additional option, mesh backpacks will be acceptable, however clear ones are preferred. Students may carry a small, nonclear pouch in their backpack to hold personal items, such as cellphones, money, and hygiene products.
