More than 500 volunteers spent their weekend installing new equipment and furniture, landscaping, and painting Alex Spence Middle School and Talented and Gifted Academy. The Day of Service hosted with the Church of the Incarnation brought $30,000 in upgrades and improvements to the campus. The event has been in planning since Principal Shanna Jones submitted a proposal in October.
A special Prep U Super Saturday and Parent Conference will celebrate all diverse abilities on April 13 at Skyline High School. Families can learn more about special education resources, as well as additional offerings and opportunities for all. Free health screenings, free vision screenings, free food, and parent workshops are among the activities. The first 300 families will also receive a special gift bag. Teachers have until March 29 to apply for a grant of up to $2,000 from the Junior League of Dallas that supports innovative teaching programs. All Dallas ISD educators are eligible to apply and the projects span all grade levels and subject areas. The first annual Specialized Programs Science Fair was held at Thomas Jefferson High School on March 2. Students from the Functional Living Skills program, the Total Communication/Autism program, and the Activities of Daily Living program participated in the fair. Projects ranged from the use of static electricity to animate butterfly wings to the design of a homemade cell phone charger. All of the participants enjoyed explaining their projects to the judges.
