 The Green Team after-school recycling club at Skyline High School makes schoolwide recycling look easy. On Wednesdays, the club’s 100 students flock into the cafeteria for their weekly meeting, huddle with their team captains for a quick check-in and then fan out into the hallways of the district’s largest school, with oversized rolling bins, stopping in classrooms to collect used office paper, plastics, soda cans, juice containers and other recyclables. After serving more than 20 years in the U.S. Navy, Chief Frederick Brown decided to give the corporate world a try. Although the stint was short-lived, the experience helped him realize that working with kids is his true calling. The MVP initiative of the Dallas ISD Coordinated School Health Initiative emphasizes three components essential to a healthy lifestyle: M = move and stay active, V = value healthy eating, and P = practice healthy habits. For the Dallas community, the Dec. 13 Cigna Dallas Mayor’s Race 5K and one mile fun run offers an enjoyable opportunity to move and stay active.
