Marisol Romero, a kindergarten two-way dual-language teacher at Lakewood Elementary, became an educator by pure coincidence. Soon after graduating college with a Sociology major, Romero visited her brother in Dallas and saw a Dallas ISD TV advertisement for the district’s alternative teaching certification program. Romero followed up on the advertisement and, within eight months, was leading a pre-K class. Romero within three years realized she had found a calling in education. Seniors from every Dallas ISD comprehensive and magnet high school will be honored for academic excellence and receive a share of  $192,000 in scholarships at the district’s 2016 Superintendent’s Scholarship Reception. The recognition event is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at Dr. Emmett J. Conrad High School, 7502 Fair Oaks Ave. Superintendent Michael Hinojosa, district trustees and administrators will attend to congratulate the recipients from every district comprehensive high school. The Dallas Independent School District announced today the appointment of Colorado educator Ivan Duran, Ed.D. as the district’s new deputy superintendent. Duran will join the district in July to replace the district’s current Deputy Superintendent Ann Smisko, who is retiring. A veteran of 26 years in public education, Duran most recently served as assistant superintendent for Elementary Education for Denver Public Schools, where he led and supervised the system’s Elementary Education Division comprised of more than 90 early childhood centers, elementary and K-8 schools. Work performed by volunteers and resources provided by partnerships help Dallas ISD schools do more for their students. The job of securing and managing those efforts often falls on a staff member whose duties include serving as volunteer/partnership coordinator. On Thursday, April 21, those coordinators were honored and recognized for the jobs they do.
