Dan D. Rogers Elementary Principal Lisa Lovato, a Dallas ISD Principal of the Year, started her career in education as an ESL teacher. About 100 Dallas ISD student-athletes who are committing to study and play sports at colleges and universities after they graduate were honored at the district’s annual National Signing Day celebration on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The event puts the students, along with family members and their coaches, on the red carpet to encourage them in their decision to further their education after high school. Much of life’s success is linked to reading and literacy, which is why schools and parents strive mightily to instill strong reading skills in children. In spite of all efforts, it can sometimes be a challenge to help children develop a love of reading. Can you spell I-M-P-R-E-S-S-I-V-E? About 120 students from 70 Dallas ISD schools recently participated in six districtwide spelling bees, and 18 of those students are now headed to the county spelling bee. More students participated in the districtwide spelling bees than the previous year, when 95 students from 60 schools competed. The county spelling bee is Feb. 16, and the winner from that will move on to the regional spelling bee.
