The Women LEAD (Learn, Excel, Achieve, Dream) scholarship program has awarded five outstanding female Dallas ISD seniors with a total of $40,000 in college scholarships. Founded in 2013 by the Junior League of Dallas in collaboration with Mary Kay Inc., the Women LEAD scholarship program was created to assist female high school students in pursuing their dreams of higher education and to create opportunities for future women leaders. Female seniors from Thomas Jefferson, South Oak Cliff, and Emmett J. Summer is just one month away! While regular school will not be in session, there are many free opportunities where children can learn a new skill, improve their reading or explore the arts. Dallas ISD has teamed with the City of Dallas under the umbrella Dallas City of Learning to bring Dallas families dozens of free and fun summer activities for children of all ages. The partnership is managed by the nonprofit organization Big Thought. John Leslie Patton Academic Center senior Uriel Lopez has won the 2017 Congressional High School Art Competition for his pencil work entitled “Preserving Patriot’s Dream.” The Congressional High School Art Competition is an annual, nationwide art competition initiated by Members of Congress in their respective districts. The competition for the 32nd Congressional District of Texas, organized by Congressman Pete Sessions, was open to all high school students in the district. It’s a Monday afternoon at Lincoln High School, and students keep popping in to say hi to Sheila Walker, the school’s community liaison. One student wants to show Walker his new cell phone; another student needs a tissue for his nose; a third students wants to talk about the previous weekend’s prom, which Walker helped set up for and ensure several students had dresses for the big night.
