Recognized for their work in Computer Science Education, the Dallas ISD STEM Department has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the DFW Alliance of Technology and Women (DFW*ATW) through their GREATMINDS program (Girls Reaching for Education About Technology and Moving in New Directions for Success)! This generous grant will be used to provide training and stipends for the sponsors of after school coding clubs at ten elementary campuses. The clubs will meet once a week for 10 weeks this spring. Five students at Carter High School have received full-ride scholarships to attend Texas Christian University. The five seniors were awarded the TCU Community Scholarships, each valued at more than $250,000, at a ceremony on Thursday. Two of the recipients, Nahjae and Tahjae Selby, are twin sisters. The other recipients are Deanna Harper, Rickey Perry and Patricia Smith. Each of the recipients had a chance to say a few words of thanks, and most broke down in happy tears. A partnership between Dallas ISD and Children’s Health has provided two incredible programs to keep students active and healthy. GoNoodle, an online interactive program, gives students fun breaks in between lessons at 157 Dallas ISD Schools. “Teachers absolutely love it,” said Jennifer Finley, director of Dallas ISD Health Services. “The nice thing about GoNoodle is that it’s not just designed for the younger population, it really does span K-12.” Ayden, a first-grader at Edna Rowe Elementary School, agrees. “I like doing GoNoodles because they are fun and we can get a lot of exercise from them,” she said. Dallas ISD has benefited this school year from the support of more than 26,000 volunteers and $8.4 million in documented donations. April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, a time set aside to thank volunteers and recognize them for their service. Dallas ISD will recognize some of its outstanding volunteers at the 2016-2017 Volunteers and Partners Awards Reception on April 20.
