Can you spell F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C? These 18 Dallas ISD students who have advanced to the County Spelling Bee sure can! The students, who were the top spellers at the districtwide spelling bee that featured 138 students from 77 schools, will compete Feb. 22 at Studio Movie Grill, 10110 W. Technology Blvd. The students will compete for a chance to win more than $50,000 in scholarships and prizes at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Winter Blitz is in full swing, and a marble is rolling through a student-built course into a target area. The activity is just one of the many features of the Destination Imagination workshop being attended by more than 2,000 students. This year’s theme, “The Incredible”, is giving participants a deeper opportunity to explore their creative spirit as they prepare for regional, state and global competitions. Dallas ISD’s Benjamin Franklin Middle School celebrated the birthday of the inventor and statesman the school is named after on Jan. 17. Franklin, also considered one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, was born on Jan. 17, 1706, in Boston. He died on April 17, 1790, at the age of 84. To celebrate, the school hosted keynote speaker Don Huffines, who represents District 16 in the Texas Senate. He encouraged the students to do their best, read often and never stop going to school.
