Nine Dallas ISD National Academy Foundation academies have achieved special designations this year from NAF among nearly 200 others recognized across the country. There were more than 100 “Model” schools determined by NAF’s annual assessment. That designation recognizes academies that deliver high-quality educational experiences. Sixty-nine academies in the network reached the “Distinguished” level, which is the network’s highest level of achievement. 2018 Distinguished academies include: W.H. Nearly 1,000 Dallas ISD students with special needs enjoyed a local track and field competition to prepare for the Area 10 Special Olympics Competition. The Dallas ISD Adapted Physical Education hosted the competitions throughout the week. “These events build our kids’ social skills, sportsmanship, self esteem and positive attitude,” said Kelli Hackney with the Adaptive PE Department. The events included track events such as relay races and field events such as long jump and tennis ball throw. The Dan D. Rogers Elementary School boys and girls basketball teams got a big boost going into their final game of the regular season: drills and tips from Southern Methodist University basketball players. Five SMU players— Jimmy Whitt, Everett Ray, Isiaha Mike, Ethan Chargois, Shake Milton— and Coach Nemanja Jovanovic visited Rogers Elementary on March 20. Rogers Elementary Principal Lisa Lovato invited the SMU players to the campus. “These SMU players are a model of what our students can strive to be,” Lovato said.
