Dallas ISD Food and Child Nutrition Services has served nearly 8 million meals to 560,274 people since school buildings closed in March due to the COVID-19 threat. The district will continue providing summer bulk grab-and-go meals to families until at least the first week of August. The meals are served on Thursdays from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. at more than 40 schools. Dallas ISD is expanding the district’s mental health services for the 2020-2021 school year through department re-organization and increased staffing. As of July 6, the Mental Health Services Department combines the Youth and Family Centers (YFC) and Psychological and Social Services (PSS) programs. Now, the Mental Health Services Department works as one unit to address the behavioral, emotional, and social issues that a child may experience and through both school and clinic-based services. After a banner school year that saw the highest enrollment in African American Studies and Mexican American Studies courses since their implementation, enrollment is now open for the 2020-2021 school year. The African American Studies course explores the rich and diverse history and culture of African Americans. Students will broaden their knowledge and understanding of African American realities and its impact on contemporary issues.
