W.T. White High School to launch Scholar TAG Program

Starting in the 2026 fall semester, select sophomores and juniors at W.T. White High School will have the opportunity to be immersed in an academic track alongside like-minded, success-driven peers. By the 2027-2028 school year, the program will expand to include freshmen.

Called Scholar TAG Program, it builds on the College Board’s AP Capstone Diploma program, giving students the opportunity to tackle rigorous advanced placement coursework starting as freshmen.

By 11th grade, participating students will transition into AP coursework for all of their classes.

“I'm putting ourselves on an academic playing field, and I really believe in the experience of being at a comprehensive high school,” Beth Wing, principal, said. “I'm interested in building an enhanced program for our most competitive kids to have what they need. We're putting them in a cohort with teachers who are well-trained and know their students’ strengths.”

Students’ GPA, PSAT scores, and prior performance on AP tests will be used to determine eligibility for the program.

Students in Scholar TAG will receive SAT prep, engage in service learning opportunities, and have the chance to earn college credit, all while maintaining a traditional high school experience.

First-year students will learn to analyze current events issues, conduct research, and by the program’s end, confidently and individually present their findings. Throughout the year, students identify a research question and use what they learned to offer a solution.

Through this structured path, students master skills that translate across any career path, including digital media literacy, critical thinking, and public speaking. Upon completing both AP Seminar and AP Research courses, students can earn a nationally recognized AP Capstone diploma.

To prepare for the launch and ensure long-term student success, educators completed specialized professional development from the College Board known as AP Summer Institute. A number of W.T. White teachers are already AP test graders with the College Board which helps build their capacity as teachers.

“I looked at the talent I had here on campus and felt this was really a good match because I already had the teachers who could deliver this program with fidelity and do great things for kids,” Wing said. “We're also going to give cohort teachers time to work together to monitor kids’ progress and intervene if they need support.”

Wing said she is looking forward to giving students more opportunities to challenge themselves.

“I'm excited to up the rigor because I noticed students will rise to your expectation when you give them the chance,” she said. “I think all of us feel really strongly that this is an opportunity to have an expectation and see what they can do.”
