First students in Dallas ISD win regional ExploraVision Competition

Skyline High School students Angelica D-L-T. and Janelly G. are headed to nationals after becoming the district’s first regional winners in the ExploraVision Competition.

The competition, which is open to students from kindergarten to 12th grade, challenges students to research and design new technology to solve a problem of their choosing. Participants must explain how they will use technology to address the issue, outline the design process, and discuss its pros and cons. Each team also submits a prototype and sample web pages to market their concept.

At Skyline, the winning project is an advanced technological contact lens known as “PEC lenses,” which are designed to act as a new medical innovation. 

The lenses, inspired by students and their coach, Jasmine Jones, address the wearer’s daily needs by responding to photosensitive epilepsy triggers and alerting patients to potential seizure activity. It is also made to combat light intensity with an innovative combination of technologies. 

The first time Skyline participated in ExploraVision, a single team earned an honorable mention. Momentum continued to build, with four teams earning honorable mentions during the 2023–2024 competition year.

“The student projects and our school name were published on the ExploraVision website. It is nice to see the ideas and work from our brilliant students highlighted on a national level. We hope that we continue to advance our programming each year so that our students can accomplish that first-place spot one year,” Jones said.
