Storybook characters, inventors come to life at Dan D. Rogers Elementary

This year, many Dallas ISD elementary schools encouraged students to dress up as storybook characters on Friday – the day before Halloween. At Dan D. Rogers Elementary, students also dressed in business attire for career day and as famous inventors.

Some of the teachers also got into the act, dressing like a matador, or The Cat in the Hat.

Students in prekindergarten-first grade dressed as their favorite storybook characters, but second-graders dressed as inventors and brought homemade depictions of their chosen person’s creation. Students in grades 3-5, went to school dressed in smaller-scale business attire and listened to career presentations from community members.

The “inventors” shared information about themselves with second-graders from other classes. One student – wearing a box decorated with kites flying in a thunderstorm – talked about Benjamin Franklin’s discovery of electricity. “It would be really dark without this invention,” the student declared.

One of the most popular inventors, however, was a student dressed as Ruth Wakefield, credited with inventing chocolate chip cookies in 1930. Students who paused to hear her presentation were awarded with a sample of tasty creation based on Wakefield's recipe.
