Madison students hear from Dallas Mavericks staff about their careers

Although many kids grow up aspiring to be stars on the football field or basketball court, the odds are long for making it to the big time as a player. Students at James Madison High School heard from professionals who have successful careers working behind the scenes in the sports world.

Dallas Mavericks employees shared their experiences at work and their journey to the basketball team’s front offices at a special event on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the school. Mavericks forward Harrison Barnes was on hand, and shared his journey to becoming a player in the NBA – focusing on goals, academics and putting in the hard work.

The event also served as the kickoff for this year’s Mavs Academic All-Stars program, which will serve five district schools: Madison, Boude Storey Middle School, Daniel Webster Elementary School, George Washington Carver Elementary School and Edward Titche Elementary School. Each month, the Mavs and Flowserve will host mentoring and tutoring sessions at each of the campuses.
