Essay contest asks students to imagine being neighbors with a legend

What would your reaction be if your hero moved into your neighborhood? The 2016 Dallas Celebration of Reading Student Essay Contest is posing that question to DFW area 4^th – 8^th grade students.

In The Hero Two Doors Down, bestselling author Sharon Robinson, who also happens to be the daughter of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, shares the story of the friendship that developed between her father and a neighborhood boy when Robinson moved in two doors down.

It was a dream come true for young Steve Satlow when his hero, Jackie Robinson, became his neighbor. The essay contest asks students to imagine what it would be like for them if their hero suddenly moved in two doors down from them. Who would it be? Why is that person your hero? What would you hope you could learn from them?

Three winners will be selected from each grade level. Contest winners and their parents will be invited to a very special breakfast with Sharon Robinson on Monday, October 24 at ATamp;T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. All entries are due Wednesday, October 5, and must be submitted electronically to contest@barbarabush.org.
