New principal sees Wilmer-Hutchins High as an ‘Oasis of Opportunity’

Following a brief vacancy at the start of the 2022-23 school year, the role of principal at Wilmer-Hutchins High School was filled with a familiar face from within – Mr. William Lane.

“Since I began my new role it has been really fast paced, but right now I want to make sure that the vision of where I want to go and how we are going to get there is laid out,” Lane said.

Before accepting his first principalship, Lane began planting the seeds as an instructional coach, then as an assistant principal at Wilmer-Hutchins, which he refers to as the “the Oasis of Opportunity” for current students and those to come.

With his ongoing legacy at the school, he has goals for the kids he has grown to know, love and mentor.

“I have two big goals,” he said. “I want to increase academic achievement and our campus TEA score from a ‘C’ to ‘B,’ with high hopes of making it an ‘A.’ Secondly, I want to have 100 percent of the 2023 senior class be college or career ready.”

Wilmer-Hutchins is an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) campus, and since the implementation of the program, the administration staff has seen a positive change. The students have been given the opportunity to engage and dive deeper into their lessons and absorb everything that they are learning.

This is only the beginning of the journey for the students, staff and new principal at Wilmer-Hutchins High School, in their oasis of opportunity.
