Dallas Mavericks surprise school with donated gear

Students at John Lewis Social Justice Academy at Oliver Wendell Holmes were in for a special treat when they received a surprise visit from the Dallas Mavericks.

“The children were so excited, it was hard to contain their enthusiasm, so we allowed them to express it – because how often is it that you get to meet NBA players,” said Principal Sharron Jackson.

Players JaVale McGee and Dāvis Bertāns surprised students during a pep rally and in their classrooms with backpacks, school supplies and Mavs T-shirts.

“I am from a similar place as these kids, and I understand what they go through, and I want to give a little hope and help,” McGee said.

Alongside the donation, the students enjoyed entertainment from the ManiAACs, Mavericks Dancers, Champ the mascot and the O.W. Holmes drumline.

Dallas ISD’s vision is to become the best urban school district in the country. We know this can’t be possible without the support of our community of partners and volunteers. If you or your company are interested in supporting school needs, please contact partners@dallasisd.org.
