Board of Trustees propose tribute for Sha'Carri Richardson

To honor track and field athlete Sha’Carri Richardson, the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees discussed naming the track field at John Kincaide Stadium, inside the Jesse Owens Athletic Complex, to the Sha'Carri Richardson Track during the October Board Briefing.

The track field, near Carter High School where Richardson ran as a student, would serve as a tribute to Richardson's remarkable achievements in sports and significant ties to the Dallas community.

A native of South Dallas, Richardson was raised in Oak Cliff by her grandmother, Ms. Betty Harp and her aunt, Shayaria Richardson. She attended Dallas ISD campuses from elementary to high school and was one of the fastest high school track and field athletes in Texas. She made history by setting numerous records including the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 4A state record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.28 seconds.

At 16 years old, Richardson won the 100-meter title at the US Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics. In 2017, she won another title at the USA Track amp; Field Junior Olympics and first place at the Pan American U20 Championships. As a student-athlete at Louisiana State University, Richardson set the collegiate record with a time of 10.75 in the 100-meter dash and became one of the top ten fastest women in history at 19 years old. Now, Richardson is the 2023 100M World Champion with a time of 10.65.

The board will vote on the naming at an upcoming Board meeting.
