Dallas ISD’s commitment to having a quality teacher in every classroom means the district must look beyond the Metroplex, the state, and, in the case of bilingual teachers, even outside of the country. For this weeks Throwback Thursday we dug in the boxes and found a group photo of the 2004 Teen School Board. The Dallas Teen School Board is a student advisory group consisting of the presidents of the junior and senior classes at each high school. The students meet monthly to discuss the issues and concerns of their schoolmates and present them to the superintendent of schools and the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees. Now fast forward 10 years today and see what’s happening  with the 2014-2015 Teen School Board.

In this video, writer and poet Joaquín Zihuatanejo shares his experience about being a poetry writer. He offers some advice to help students become good readers and extraordinary writers. Joaquín credits his grandfather as his main influence in writing. Joaquín lived in East Dallas during his childhood and graduated from Dallas ISD. Joaquín was the winner of the 2008 Individual World Poetry Slam Championship besting 77 poets representing cities all over North America, France, Japan, and Australia. The 2014 season for UIL volleyball is over but the high-blocking, low-digging action saw stellar performances from key student-athletes and a shining record of zero district losses by one Dallas ISD team on their route to playoff contention. Carter (10-0) led district 11-4A ahead of Lincoln (7-3), Wilmer Hutchins (6-4), and James Madison (4-6) for playoff qualification this season. Gone are the days when learning at Maple Lawn Elementary School meant virtually all students sat in classrooms dreaming about going outside for recess. Today, many of the school’s 500-plus students spend part of their school day learning in an outdoor classroom equipped with plants, murals, structures for shade and wildlife habitats, water features, a compost station, and barrels that collect rainwater. In her search for just the right school, parent Leah Williams wanted something different for her sons Kole, Kade and Kace, each of whom currently attends one of Dallas ISD’s non-traditional schools. Kole attends Harry Stone Montessori Academy and Kade and Kace both attend the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy.
