As part of the Intensive Schools Network, Raúl Quintanilla, Sr. Middle School receives additional campus resources that it puts to great use. The school has multiple community partnerships that help students, teachers and parents. For example, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) President Domingo Garcia has donated incentives, including tablets to sixth-graders, to students who achieved academic excellence. Meanwhile, the Sylvan Learning Center provides foundational math skills to students, and Frost Bank provides financial literacy workshops to parents. Nakia Douglas, a Dallas ISD Principal of the Year, said that leading students at the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy is similar to a parent raising their child. Hundreds of Dallas ISD students gathered at Fair Park recently where they took on instant challenges with the Star Wars theme: May the Creative Force Be with You. Destination Imagination is an educational program in which students solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions at tournament competitions. Sponsored by the Student Activities Department, elementary and secondary students – in Star Wars costumes – worked in teams and on deadline with tasks and performance-based, hands-on activities throughout the day. Michael Ruiz, a Dallas ISD 2015 Teacher of the Year, caught the educator bug in the 11th grade when his teacher asked him to act as the substitute for a class. After teaching trigonometry to his peers and friends, one of his classmates came up and told him he did an awesome job. “After that day, I was hooked,” Ruiz said. Manny Scott, one of the original Freedom Writers, went from being a dropout to earning his Ph.D, thanks to the help of an inspiring student teacher. In presentations around the country he shares his experience with students to help them take responsibility for their lives.  He works to eliminate bullying and encourages students to spread a philosophy of compassion and understanding. Today, more than 100 Dallas ISD student-athletes and their families gathered at Ellis Davis Field House to celebrate athletic signings to colleges and universities across the country.
