The five Dallas ISD schools with a School Day Redesign calendar proudly opened their doors to students on Aug. 2 as part of a bold effort to catch students up from learning loss caused by the pandemic.

As he visited H.I. Holland Elementary School at Lisbon–one of the five schools with the Redesign calendar–Superintendent Michael Hinojosa welcomed staff and students to the school.

“I’ve never been more proud of our students, staff and families for the way they have stepped up and responded to this pandemic,” Hinojosa said. “And these five schools who are opening today are pioneers in trying to make a big difference in getting caught up on learning loss.”

In addition to H.I. Holland Elementary school, the other four campuses with a Redesign calendar are:

  • Maple Lawn Elementary School
  • Edna Rowe Elementary School
  • Thomas J. Rusk Middle School
  • Boude Storey Middle School

Dallas ISD has three different calendars with three different start dates this month. Forty-one schools with an Intersession calendar start school on Aug. 9, and the other district schools with a Base Calendar start Aug. 16. Schools that had strong support from staff and families had the option of adopting an alternative calendar with the earlier start date.

The alternative calendars are part of a comprehensive approach the district is taking to help ensure the pandemic doesn’t have a long-lasting impact on student learning.
