Dallas ISD will launch a record number of choice programs and schools in the 2021–2022 school year, significantly increasing the education choices in families’ backyards across the Dallas area.
This will create nearly 60 choice schools across Dallas ISD. See a map of the new choice schools and programs.
Representatives from the Dallas ISD Office of Transformation and Innovation surprised schools with the great news the week of March 1. OTI identified and selected the schools as part of the Public School Choice 7.0 process, where educators create high-quality, best-fit options for Dallas ISD students to realize their full academic potential.
This year also sees a record number of secondary schools selected as choice schools.
“Reimagining secondary instruction for the 22nd century is a key to college and career readiness,” OTI Deputy Chief Angie Gaylord said. “We want to ensure every family has a best-fit school in their own back yard, regardless of their student’s age.”
The selected schools fall into one of these categories:
- Transformation: A brand new start-up school
- Innovation: An existing neighborhood school adding a schoolwide model/program
- Innovation Pilot: An existing neighborhood school adding a school/model program to pilot
- High School Redesign Incubator: A two-year period to incubate a new school model
The announced transformation schools are:
- Global School at Paul Quinn 6-12, launching next school year, will operate under the International Baccalaureate (IB) model in partnership with the HBCU in southern Dallas.
- Hybrid School K-8, launching next school year, is a first-of-its-kind public school option for families in Dallas where students will do part of their learning remotely and part of their learning on campus.
- By offering a Montessori program and a two-way dual language program, students at Montessori at E D Walker, which launches next school year, students will have an opportunity to adapt to an independent learning environment while acquiring two languages – English and Spanish.
- Single Gender Replication K-8, which doesn’t have an announced launch date, will copy the model of the successful Solar Preparatory School for Girls.
- Walnut Hill International Leader K-8 doesn’t have an announced launch date.
The announced innovation schools are:
- John Neely Bryan Elementary is launching a novel engineering model next school year
- Julius Dorsey Elementary is launching a leadership model next school year
- Eddie B. Johnson Elementary School is launching a STEM model next school year
- Herbert Marcus Elementary School is launching a leadership model next school year
- Highland Meadows Elementary School is launching a personalized learning model next school year
- Kennedy-Curry Middle School is launching a modern arts model next school year
- Hector P. Garcia Middle School is launching an International Baccalaureate model next school year
- Robert T. Hill Middle School is launching a global leadership model next school year
- Alex W. Spence Middle School is launching a college and career prep model next school year
- North Dallas High School is launching a design thinking model next school year
The announced innovation pilot schools are:
- Birdie Alexander Elementary School is piloting a visual and performing arts model next school year
- James Bowie Elementary School is piloting a service learning model next school year
- Paul L. Dunbar Learning Center is piloting a STEM model next school year
The announced high school redesign incubator school is:
- Roosevelt High School will incubate a STEAM model starting next school year
