Special Education Department to continue serving families over the summer

The 2019-2020 school year is officially coming to a close, but in Dallas ISD, learning is a year round practice. This school year has challenged the Special Education Department, families, and students to think differently and look for improved systems for learning.  From working with new leadership in the department to shifting to At-Home Learning (AHL) and teletherapy; from discussing the installation of cameras in all special education classrooms, to working with parents on virtual Parent Academies.

To help keep this momentum going over the summer,  families of students with disabilities are encouraged to stay connected by checking their emails regularly and following the Special Education Department on Twitter @DISDSPED for weekly announcements. At-home learning materials will still be available on the AHL website throughout the summer so that students can catch up on activities that they may not have been able to access over the past couple of months.  Likewise, students that meet the eligibility criteria for Extended School Year (ESY) services will continue to work virtually with teachers during the month of June. Parents can reach out to their child’s teacher if they have additional questions about summer services and/or resources available to them over the school break.

Dallas ISD families are encouraged to continue searching for learning, as well as maintaining a balanced routine that includes time to read, play, meals, breaks, exercise, and, most importantly, spend quality family time.

The Special Education Department thanks all parents for their flexibility and partnership this school year, and wishes everyone a safe and fulfilling summer break. 2020-2021 will bring many more new and exciting ways to explore teaching and learning benefiting all students.
