The Dallas ISD STEM Department partnered with the Microsoft Store at NorthPark Center to provide students with hands-on and engaging computer science activities during Computer Science Week.

As part of Computer Science Week, students from six Dallas ISD schools visited the Microsoft Store at NorthPark Center to learn more about STEM through engaging workshops and demonstrations.

“This was a great opportunity for our students to see real-world applications of computer science and participate in a live stream with computer science professionals with similar backgrounds as the students,” Dallas ISD STEM Department Manager Crystal Alexander said. “The department has received several emails from the participating campuses regarding how much learning and fun took place during Computer Science Week. Our department looks forward to partnering with local STEM professionals and organizations to provide future opportunities like this one for our students.”

The students watched live streams and built a sensorized robotic finger, coded their own video game and experienced virtual reality and augmented reality. The sessions were:

  • Girls in Space on Dec. 9 featuring a live stream with four of the top women in NASA for engineering, computer science, aeronautics and space missions
  • Latina Girls in Gaming on Dec. 10 featuring a live stream with Christina Amaya, a board member on the International Game Developers Association and president and cofounder of Latinx in Gaming
  • All Kids Code on Dec. 11 featuring a live stream with Nadmi Casiano, the first deaf woman to graduate with an Aeronautical Engineering Degree
  • African-American Girls in Space on Dec. 12 featuring a live stream with Joana Higginbotham, one of the first African-American female astronauts
  • Mancode on Dec. 13 featuring a live stream with Nick Cannon

The schools that attended throughout the week were:

  • Frank Guzick Elementary School
  • Trinity Heights Elementary School
  • Thelma Page Richardson Elementary School
