Dallas ISD Strong: District details next steps for schools impacted by tornado

0

As he toured the schools most damaged by Sunday night’s storm, Superintendent Michael Hinojosa saw families walking their neighborhood in shock.

And while Hinojosa said he couldn’t believe his own eyes at some of the damage, he knows Dallas ISD and greater Dallas community will come together to support the families in need. Dallas ISD is accepting donations and volunteer efforts for those who want to support district families impacted by the storm, counselors are ready to help students work through any possible trauma, and maintenance and facilities crews have been working across the clock to get schools ready for students.

“We have a strong team. We are a strong community,” Hinojosa said. “Dallas has a can-do spirit. And all of our different entities will work together.”

Moving forward

The tornado significantly damaged these three schools:

  • Edward H. Cary Middle School will be closed indefinitely, and students and teachers are being assigned to Benjamin Franklin Middle School and Francisco Medrano Middle School starting Wednesday, Oct. 23

  • Walnut Hill Elementary School will be closed indefinitely, and students and teachers are being assigned to Tom Field Elementary, 2151 Royal Lane, on Wednesday, Oct. 23

The three schools listed below suffered less extensive damage but are still being assessed. The district is planning a temporary relocation for these schools to the Alfred Loos Field House starting Wednesday, Oct. 23.

  • David Burnet Elementary School
  • Leonides Cigarroa Elementary
