Supporting Schools: Dallas ISD parent volunteer earns Heroes for Children Award

The State Board of Education named Marnie Glaser, a Dallas ISD parent and volunteer, as a recipient of its Heroes for Children Award.

The State Board of Education (SBOE) selected one outstanding volunteer from each board district to honor with the award.

Whether it was painting a mural herself by the school’s front door or creating an outdoor science courtyard complete with koi pond, flower garden and pergola, Glaser last year worked to make Preston Hollow Elementary School a child-centered environment with a strong literacy culture. She spearheaded an effort to launch the Travel the World Through Reading program and helped create an “Around the World” theme for the library and café.

“We are in awe of their commitment and are so grateful for the assistance the Heroes for Children award recipients are providing,” SBOE Chair Donna Bahorich said.

For her part, Glaser said it’s important to volunteer not only as a parent, but as a community member.

“Volunteering in our schools serves our entire city and community; we are only as good as our education system,” Glaser said.
