Futsal tournament in Florida gives students life-changing experience

About 20 students from two Dallas ISD schools are back from a life-changing experience: competing in Florida in a Futsal tournament against teams from across the globe.

Futsal is similar to indoor soccer, but involves only five players at a time. By winning the sixth-grade Dallas ISD Futsal Tournament held in March, teams from Stockard and Spence middle schools earned their entry into the World Futsal Championships. And while neither team came out as the tournament champion, Stockard Coach Ruby Ayala and Spence Coach Scott Brothers said the trip was a priceless experience for the players.

“This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these students,” Ayula said.

From their first airplane rides to meeting Mickey Mouse at Disney World, the students spent much of the trip in awe.

Councilman Adam Medrano and Trustee Miguel Solis helped lead a fundraising effort so Spence Middle School could attend the tournament. The Spence team then shared some of those funds with the Stockard team.

After the trip ended and the students safely landed back in Dallas, Coach Ayala and Coach Brothers both heard the same thing from the players: “When can we go back again?”
