Two middle-school teams emerged from the sixth-grade Dallas ISD Futsal Tournament this month to earn a trip next summer to Disney World to compete against teams from across the globe.

The sixth-graders participated in non-coed divisions. The winning boys team is from Stockard Middle School, led by Coach Brent Bleasdell. The winning girls team is from Spence Middle School and is led by Coach Scott Brothers. Both will compete in the United Scholastic Futsal World Championships in July in Orlando.

The teams will start raising money to fund their trips to the championships.

There have been three separate tournaments, starting with an elementary tournament on Feb. 10 for teams comprising students in grades 1-5. Twelve teams participated in the event, and Maple Lawn Elementary took first place. The second tournament on Feb. 17 was for teams made up of students in grades 7-8, with 12 teams competing once again. The Dallas Environmental Science Academy team took first in that one.

More than 500 Dallas ISD students participated this year in Futsal, a program offered by the district’s Urban School Wellness Department. The game is similar to indoor soccer, but is played in a smaller space with some rule variations. This is the third year Dallas ISD students have competed in the sport.
