Dallas ISD ranks seventh for high participation in breakfast program

Dallas ISD’s Food and Child Nutrition Services (FCNS) ranked seventh among the 75 largest school districts in the country for participation in the district’s breakfast program.

All Dallas ISD campuses offer Breakfast in the Classroom, with meals being delivered to younger students in their classrooms and grab-and-go kiosks available in high schools.

“Our goal as a department is to provide meals that boost student achievement and support the efforts of Dallas ISD schools,” said FCNS executive director Michael Rosenberger. “Providing every student breakfast, and in turn an equitable start to their day, is crucial in this. Creating innovative breakfast strategies across our diverse district has allowed us to reach and feed as many students as possible each morning.”

The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) issued a School Breakfast Scorecard and a companion report, School Breakfast: Making it Work in Large School Districts, earlier this month, to gauge how many low-income students have access to proper nutrition at their schools during the 2016-2017 school year.

Both FRAC reports may be read here.

“Breakfast is key to providing fuel for the brain to jumpstart the learning process,” said Melinda Hillis, registered dietitian and menu planning supervisor. “Access to nutritious breakfast options each morning gives students the energy and focus to be successful at school and in other areas of their life.”
