Trustees approve plans for campus closures, consolidations next year

Students at two schools in Dallas ISD will attend different schools next year if their current campuses fail to meet state accountability standards at the end of this school year. In addition, the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees voted Thursday, Jan. 25, to close three campuses. Below is a summary of Board-approved actions.

Edward Titche Elementary School will remain open if they meet state accountability standards this year. If Titche does not meet the state standard, the campus will close and students will be rezoned to other elementary schools in the area.

C.F. Carr Elementary School will remain open if the school meets state accountability standards this year. If Carr does not meet standards, the campus will close and students will be rezoned to other schools in the area.

Thomas Edison Middle School will close at the end of this year and relocate to L.G. Pinkston High School. If the school does not meet state accountability standards, it will consolidate with L.G. Pinkston High School, changing Pinkston High School’s grade configuration to 7-12. However, if Edison does meet state standards, it will still be located on the Pinkston High School, but as a separate 7-8 school.

J.W. Ray Learning Center and JFK Learning Center will both close at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. Students from both schools will attend nearby Cesar Chavez Learning Center.

The Board of Trustees has been reviewing options for the four schools (Edison, Titch, Carr and Ray) due to the implementation of House Bill 1842 this year, which states that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has the authority to either close schools that have been low-performing for at least four consecutive years, or has the right to take over the school district. Dallas ISD took this action to preclude TEA intervention.

In other actions, the Board of Trustees voted to close Sudie Williams Elementary School as a neighborhood school next year and students will be rezoned to K.B. Polk Elementary School. However, Polk will retain their gifted and talented/vanguard. A 4-8 Talented and Gifted Vanguard/Academy will open at Sudie Williams in the fall.
