Partnership with neighborhood nonprofit brings great summer camp to Dunbar

Dallas ISD has partnered with Frazier Revitalization, a neighborhood-based nonprofit, to bring a successful summer camp to Paul L. Dunbar Learning Center.

The six-week camp is focused on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), a growing priority across Dallas ISD. Students start each camp day discussing a different SEL concept before moving onto activities that require them to talk with and respect each other. The camp also has enrichment activities such as reading, dance, photography and art.

“This camp has been a tremendous success,” said Henry Lawson of Frazier Revitalization. “There is such a need in this community for the kids to build on their social and emotional skills that will prepare them for success later in life.”

Crystal Rentz, director of summer learning for Dallas ISD, said partnering with Frazier Revitalization has been successful because the nonprofit’s members and students come from the same community.

“If the instructors and families already know each other from the neighborhood and have already established trust, it makes the camp so much more successful,” Rentz said. “We hope to partner with more community programs like this in the future.”
