Dallas ISD simplifies student transfer process

Dallas ISD is simplifying the process for how students can transfer to other district schools.

Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said at Thursday’s board meeting that simplifying the student transfer process will help more families find their best fit Dallas ISD school. Students will now be able to transfer schools for any reason, whereas, before, they had to have a curriculum- or hardship-related reason.

Also, students who have been approved for transfer into a school will no longer have to reapply every year to attend that school, as long as there are still available spots at the campus.

The process change will mean that Dallas ISD will no longer accept Affidavits for Proof of Residency, as those families will now also go through the simplified transfer process. Homeless students who have used the affidavits will now use the Student Residency Questionnaire.

Meanwhile, the district will establish a uniform approach to accurately determine student capacity at each campus. Once the capacity is determined, the principal could potentially have the school go up to 110-percent capacity, but no more.

After a school is at capacity, enrollment priority will be given to children who live within the attendance boundaries.

Trustee Dustin Marshall helped spearhead the change to the transfer process. The change will go into effect during the 2017–2018 school year.

Students looking to transfer to a different school for 2017-2018 should have already completed that transfer by March 31.
