Eighteen Dallas ISD students advance in Texas History Day Contest

The Dallas Area Regional History Day contest was held Saturday, Feb. 18, at Townview Center. Students participated from the Dallas, Sunnyvale, Highland Park, Plano, Hockaday and Mesquite School Districts.

More than 300 students from 27 schools competed with 204 entries on topics related to this year’s theme “Taking a Stand” in history. The following 32 Dallas ISD students won medals for their projects. Eighteen of them will advance to the Texas History Day Contest at the Bob Bullock Museum/University of Texas on April 29.

Junior Division:

Group Exhibit: 1st place: Irma Rangel YWL School – Karley Sanchez and Wendy Sifuentes for “Women’s Rights Movements.” 2nd place: W.H. Gaston Middle School – Francisco Milton, Reich Lopez, Henry Tores, and Xavier Roja for “Operation Valkyrie: Schutzstaffel Resistance.”

Individual Exhibit: 1st place: Irma Rangel YWL School – Daniela Cedillo for “Mary Wollstonecraft: Pioneer Feminist.” 3rd place: W.H. Gaston Middle School – Lizabeth Samaniego for “Sophie Scroll & the White Rose: Taking a Stand against Hitler.”

Individual performance: 3rd place: Irma Rangel YWL School – Laura Aquirre for “Alexander Hamilton.”

Historical Paper: 2nd place: W.H. Gaston Middle School – Amaya Brisby for “Emmeline Pankhurst: The Suffrage Movement.” 3rd place: W.H. Gaston Middle School – Abril Hernandez for “The Declaration of Sentiments: A Demand for Women’s Rights.”

Group Documentary: 1st place: Irma Rangel YWL School– Shanelle Weber, Allyson Schmidt, and Audrey Jacobson for “The Woman that Saved the Cities.” 2nd place: Irma Rangel YWL School – Lily Harrigan, Eliza Richter, and Ruth Rodriguez for “Barbara M. Lynn: An Advocate for Women’s Rights.” 3rd place: Irma Rangel YWL School – Agum Ring, Riley Morris, and Abigail Patrick-Labilles for “Ann Richards: Helping Women and Minorities.”

Individual Documentary: 2nd place: Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy – Kadar W. Price for “Joan of Arc.” 3rd place: Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy – Carlos Medina for “The Goodnight – Loving Trail.”

Group website: 2nd place: Irma Rangel YWL School – Paulina Marceleno and Sadie Redmond for “Battle of Dunkirk.”

Individual website: 2nd place: Irma Rangel YWL School – Rachel Olaleye for “The Enlightenment: The Age of Reason.” 3rd place: Irma Rangel YWL School – Angelina Brierre for “The Montgomery Bus Boycott.”

Senior Division

Group Performance: 3rd place: Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy – Michael Ellis, Lucky Lawhorn, Isaiah Merritt, Jabri Garrett, and Matthew Merritt for “Don’t Sleep…Wake Up.”

Individual Documentary: 3rd place: A Maceo Smith New Tech High School – Gustavo Martinez for “Living Life in Peace.”
