Did you know that nationally 7.3 million children have at least one parent in jail or prison?  What does this mean for schools and educators? The emotional turmoil is difficult for everyone to handle when there is a parent that is incarcerated, so much so that statistics sadly reveals that 70 percent of these kids with an incarcerated parent are doomed to follow in the same footsteps.

But as educators, you can make a difference with this population just by understanding the issue. The Dallas ISD, in partnership with the “National Prison Summit on Mass Incarceration, presents The School to Prison Pipeline: What Every Educator Should Know” on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Concord Church, 6808 Pastor Bailey Dr. The training will be conducted by the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School Educators and will focus on topics such as: Disrupting the School to Prison Pipeline; Moving from Zero Tolerance to Transformative Justice; Freedom School Pedagogy; Expectations

Dallas County Chief Juvenile Officer Dr. Terry Smith is the opening keynote speaker, ending with a diverse panel focused on Community Collaboration: Changing the Odds for All of our Children and Youth.

Register today and understand that the best way to avoid the school-to-prison pipeline starts in the classroom!
