Earlier this month, the HBCU Experience cranked up at Hulcy STEAM Middle School to highlight historically black colleges and universities. The atmosphere felt a lot like a pep rally thanks to performances by the Lincoln, Sunset, Wilmer-Hutchins and South Oak Cliff high school bands, cheerleaders and dancers.

About 500 students participated and more than 250 band students performed at the event, which was coordinated by the Dallas ISD African American Success Initiative, on Sept. 22.

Each student who attended received a book – “The HBCU Experience” – to help reinforce the importance of developing personal home libraries.

Between band performances, students answered HBCU-related trivia questions to share fun and interesting facts. After the event, all the students attended the Districtwide College Fair to learn more about the colleges and universities represented there.
