Fifth-graders Marco Mares of William Brown Miller Elementary School and Lyriq Turner of Charles Rice Learning Center are co-stars in the just-launched mayor’s summer reading club promotional video.

The public service announcement, a spoof on the action-packed “24” television series features the two students with Mayor Mike Rawlings and Clarice Tinsley of Fox 4 News. The message to families is to earn prizes and prevent summer learning loss by keeping kids reading throughout summer break.

At Tuesday’s kickoff of the annual summer reading program, the Mayor stressed the importance of summer reading.

“Summer is certainly a time for kids to relax,” Rawlings said. “But it’s essential that we keep reading alive as part of our family’s daily routine. We all take time out of our day to eat, exercise, sleep and text our friends. Reading should be right up there – it’s about keeping our minds healthy and engaged.”

The free eight-week Mayor’s Summer Reading Club program runs June 4-Aug. 6. The focus is encouraging daily reading of books, newspapers, magazines, audiobooks and e-books. Sponsored by the Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program, the Summer Reading Club is a family affair, open to children and adults of all ages.

Sign up is underway now and can be completed in person at any of the 29 Dallas library locations, the Dallas Public Library’s Bookmobile, online at dallaslibrary.org/msrc, or at the kick-off parties set for June 4-10 at all branches of the city library. (Check with your local library for dates and times of kick-off parties.) Every child who signs up will receive a free book).

Young club members can earn weekly incentive prizes – from books and Pizza Hut gift certificates to zoo, circus, theater, museum and baseball tickets – by reporting the number of hours or books they read in person at any Dallas Public Library or online at dallaslibrary.org/msrc. Kids and adults who meet the requirements for the grand-prize drawings will be entered for a chance to win tablets, early-literacy games, hotel stays, restaurant certificates, movie passes, and more.
