Collegiate Academies change the higher-ed game for students
Quote of the week: “It’s a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot of money.” Jose Lopez, a senior at W.W. Samuell Early College High School, on how much money a Dallas ISD student can save in an early college high school program.
This week kicked off in a big way with an event celebrating the eight collegiate academies opening next school year. The collegiate academies will let Dallas ISD high school students, at no cost to them, earn up to 60 hours of college credit or an associate’s degree. The academies are being called game changers, and for good reason. (Read more about the new collegiate academies.)
One of the new collegiate academies will be a P-TECH (Pathways to Technology Early College High School) model housed at Seagoville High School. The P-TECH model has too many exciting features to detail in this short blurb, so go here to learn more.
Teachers and students continue doing awesome things
Kassandra Castañeda, a fourth-grader at Frank Guzick Elementary School in Dallas, is this year’s Best of Show winner in Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s (DART) 2016 Student Art Contest. (Go here to see Castañeda’s award-winning artwork)
Eric Hale, a teacher at David G. Burnet Elementary, is one of only 10 teachers nationwide named finalists for the 2016 Fishman Prize for Superlative Classroom Practice, a $25,000 award recognizing the nation’s most effective teachers working in high-need public schools. Hale is in New York City this weekend meeting with a panel of Fishman judges. (Read more here)
Hooray for two-way!
The Dallas ISD Two-Way Dual-Language Program, which teaches students to read, write, and think in two languages, was showcased at a great information fair last weekend. (Go here for an inside look into the event)
