More than 6,600 parents registered their children for pre-K in Dallas ISD last week as part of Pre-K Registration Week.

Kristine Delgado, Dallas ISD Early Childhood Manager, said it was a great first week to kick off the pre-K registration enrollment period. She emphasized that pre-K registration is ongoing, and that parents can still visit their local elementary school to sign their child up for pre-K.

“We are off to a great start, and we look forward to continuing registering children for pre-K to set them up for the brightest possible future,” Delgado said.

What are the qualifications for enrolling a child in pre-K?

To be eligible for the district pre-K program, a child must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2016 of the upcoming school year. Pre-K is available for 3 year olds at select Dallas ISD schools.

The child is eligible for enrollment in the pre-K program if he/she meets at least one of the following requirements:

  • The child is eligible to take part in the national free or reduced-price school lunch program. To find out if your child is eligible, click here.
  • The child is unable to speak and comprehend the English language.
  • The child is homeless.
  • The child is a dependent of an active duty member of the U.S. armed forces.
  • The child is or has been in foster care.

About 90 percent of four-year-olds in Dallas ISD meet at least one requirement, and are therefore eligible to register for Pre-K.
