From April 4–8, Dallas ISD is holding its weeklong effort to encourage parents to enroll their children in pre-K.

Here are the details for Pre-K Registration Week.

Why should I register my child in pre-K?

Accepted research shows that 90 percent of a child’s brain development occurs in their first five years. Simply put, the research proves that quality early education is critical in preparing children for lifelong success.

Where do I register?

You can register your child for pre-K at your local elementary school. To learn your local elementary school and its location, click here.

What documentation should I bring to register?

To register your child in pre-K, you’ll need to fill out the registration application. You can download and print out the application here, or pick up a copy at your local Dallas ISD elementary school.

Along with the application, you’ll also need:

  • The child’s birth certificate
  • The child’s current immunization record
  • The child’s social security card (optional, but will save time if you have it)
  • Proof of residence (a utility bill or lease)
  • Picture ID of the child’s parent or guardian
  • Proof of income for all working members of the household, or a SNAP/TANF statement (if the child is eligible for free or reduced-price school lunches)
  • Military ID card of parent or guardian (if applicable)
  • Court papers indicating conservatorship or foster child placement (if applicable)

What are the qualifications for enrolling my child in pre-K?

To be eligible for the district pre-K program, a child must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2016 of the upcoming school year. The child is eligible for enrollment in the pre-K program if he/she meets at least one of the following requirements:

  • The child is eligible to take part in the national free or reduced-price school lunch program. To find out if your child is eligible, click here.
  • The child is unable to speak and comprehend the English language.
  • The child is homeless.
  • The child is a dependent of an active duty member of the U.S. armed forces.
  • The child is or has been in foster care.

About 90 percent of four-year-olds in Dallas ISD meet at least one requirement, and are therefore eligible to register for Pre-K.
