AlumNow: Skyline grad encourages students to own their future

0

A 2004 graduate of Skyline High School, Christopher Stewart learned early that he was the master of his fate and became accustomed to taking advantage of every opportunity presented to him. Today, he encourages students to do the same and to take ownership of their future.

AlumNow, The Hub feature that profiles district alumni, caught up with Stewart for an update.

What are you doing now?

I’m associate director of recruitment of admissions and programming at Dillard University in New Orleans.

Briefly list a few of your career and/or personal highlights.

After graduating from Skyline High School in 2004, I earned my bachelor’s degree in political science. Since then, I have worked within the Division of Enrollment Management at Dillard University where I’m an administrator.

What was your favorite subject or activity/involvement in high school?

Although I was involved in a lot of activities as a student, my favorite thing was the work I did as the ads editor of The Origin, our student yearbook.

Who was your favorite teacher?

My favorite teacher was Ms. Stacey Johnson. She was a computer science teacher who held all of her students to high standards. She taught me a lot about self-accountability, and to this day, she remains a great mentor to me.

What lesson did you learn in high school or beyond that has served you well through the years?

I am responsible for my personal success. No matter the obstacles I face, I have to make the best decisions possible to ensure that I win!

What advice, if any, would you offer to high school students today?

Don’t let high school graduation be your final stop. Take ownership of your future and prepare for life after graduation. If you see an opportunity, take advantage of it; if you don’t see an opportunity, make one!

College/University and degree earned:

B.A., political science, Dillard University, 2008
