AlumNow: Business alum puts stock in the advice of others who’ve succeeded

0

As a student at the School of Business and Management at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, Jakeim Jackson-Bell (Class of 2010) enjoyed writing business proposals. After graduating from high school, he went on to earn a business degree and landed a job in human resources. Today, he is continuing his higher education path working toward his MBA. Through it all, he has built a solid foundation by learning to take the advice of others.

What are you doing now?

I’m a human resource manager at Briarwood School in Houston and working on my MBA in health care administration.

Briefly list a few of your career and/or personal highlights.

I feel that all of my years in Dallas ISD schools have attributed to my success. My family moved here in 2001, and I began my education at Clara Oliver Elementary, then on to Oliver Wendell Holmes Middle School, and finally Townview. My years at Townview were amazing. I graduated in 2010, and went on to attend college at UTSA, and there I earned my BBA in Human Resource Management in 2014. I’m now a first year student at TSU working on my MBA in Health Care Administration. I’ve maintained a 4.0 GPA, and I’m a human resource manager.

What was your favorite subject or activity/involvement in high school?

Business management classes were my favorite. I enjoyed writing business proposals for classroom assignments, business demonstrations, and being involved in business organizations. I was a member of DECA, I was also chosen to do morning announcements each day for about two years.

Who was your favorite teacher?

Ms. Hambleton was my favorite teacher. She was such an exciting teacher, with so much energy and drive. She encouraged her students each day, and she made us challenge ourselves daily. She was always willing to go the extra mile for afterschool and weekend activities. Even after graduation, she made sure to keep up with the graduates and offer any assistance they might need.

What lesson did you learn in high school or beyond that has served you well through the years?

I’ve learned that if you take the advice of those who have already succeeded in life, you can be as successful as they have been. I’ve also learned that if you prepare yourself properly, it’s easier to stay on task. One lesson I learned before graduating high school, was that if you put your mind to it and believe in yourself, anything is possible.

What advice, if any, would you offer to high school students today?

Never give up. Set your goals high and prepare yourself for success. Never be a follower, be a leader, and when you lead, lead well. You determine your own success!!!
